ASA24

ASA24 Accessibility & Compatibility Features

The ASA24 application (ASA24) has been designed to be accessible to all users, compliant with the Section 508 standards, and compatible with screen readers and other assistive technologies. However, this is an ongoing process and it is possible that some users may encounter problems using some elements of ASA24.

For questions about our continuing efforts to make ASA24 accessible to all users, or to report an ASA24 accessibility problem, please complete the form on our website Contact Us page. If you have difficulty using the form, you may also send us an e-mail from the Contact Us page.

Important Notes Regarding Accessibility

ASA24 provides mouse-free navigation using keyboard equivalents, text equivalents, and assistive technologies such as: closed captioned Help video clips and Agent text bubbles, screen readers that support Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA), and speech recognition products. ASA24 has been tested using Microsoft Windows XP™ and Mozilla Firefox™ 3.0 for Windows, Freedom Scientific JAWS™ 10, and Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking™ 10. Because of differences in various manufacturers’ products, full compatibility with all operating systems, browsers, and assistive technologies cannot be assured.

Using ASA24 with Freedom Scientific JAWS

To use the JAWS screen reader application with ASA24, users must first download Flex scripts for JAWS from the Adobe accessibility website at www.adobe.com/go/flex_accessibility.

To verify that the Flex scripts for JAWS are correctly installed, use the INSERT+Q keys when JAWS is running. If the scripts are installed correctly, users will hear "Updated for Adobe Flex 1.5 and 2" in the voice response to the keystroke combination.

JAWS’ Navigation Quick Keys are automatically enabled when users read web pages with the SayAll command. Although useful when navigating web pages, some browsers do not allow typing text into ASA24 form fields. Some browsers also do not use standard keyboard equivalents when JAWS’ Navigation Quick Keys is enabled.

If you receive a “Jump To Line” dialog box response from JAWS while entering text into ASA24, we recommend JAWS’ Navigation Quick Keys be temporarily turned off.

To turn off Navigation Quick Keys, use INSERT+Z. To turn JAWS’ Navigation Quick Keys back on after your ASA24 session is complete, or to use Navigation Quick Keys in another application, use INSERT+Z again.

JAWS conflict with ASA24 Agent Voice

ASA24’s Agent voice is designed to automatically mute if another screen reader application (such as JAWS) is running before ASA24 starts. Unfortunately, not all browsers allow ASA24 to detect the presence of a screen reader application. If a screen reader and ASA24 Agent voice conflict, use the ASA24 Preferences button to uncheck the ASA24’s Agent voice.

Other Issues

If the main ASA24 application window loses focus, using the TAB key to move input focus to the next control will no longer work. On regular keyboards, use the number pad SLASH key to move focus back to the main ASA24 application window. On laptop keyboards, use CTRL+WINDOWS key+8 to move focus back to the main ASA24 application window.

Using ASA24 with Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking

When Dragon is running, users can navigate ASA24 by voice instead of mouse or keyboard. To navigate, say, “Press,” “Press Key,” or “Type,” then say:

  • “TAB” to move the input focus (highlight) to the next control.
  • “SHIFT TAB” to move the input focus to the previous control.
  • “ESC” to cancel a Tutorial movie or cancel a Help screen.
  • “CONTROL DOWN ARROW” to open a tree, combo box, or radio button group control, give it focus but not select it.
  • Control Shift UP Arrow or Control Shift DOWN Arrow to move up or down within a button group without selecting.
  • “LEFT ARROW,” “RIGHT ARROW,” “UP ARROW,” or “DOWN ARROW” to move up, down, left or right inside a tree or combo box control. These keys also selects a highlighted radio button and activates a radio button or check box.
  • “SPACE BAR” to select inside a combo box, radio button group or check box control. This key also opens or closes a tree node (alternative method); activates a highlighted button; and inserts a space in a text entry box.

Selecting ASA24 controls by voice

Instead of using TAB to move input focus, Dragon users can select an ASA24 control by voice. Speak a button label or window title to activate. For example, to activate the Add A Food button, say, “ADD A FOOD.” Or, to select Don’t Know, say “Don’t Know.”

If more than one control (text box, check box, or option button) matches what is said, a series of numbered markers appear next to possible matches. A number 1 marker points to Dragon's first choice. This is the choice that will be selected if a user says, "Click That," "That One," or "Click That One." Other number markers point to additional choices. Say, "Choose" and the number of the marker next to the list to select, or simply say the number.

Preferences & Quit

Say, "Modify" to modify ASA24 user preferences. Say, "Quit" to exit ASA24.

Other Issues

If the main ASA24 application window looses focus, speaking the TAB key to move input focus to the next control will no longer work. Say, “DRAG MOUSE,” then “UP,” “DOWN,” “RIGHT,” or “LEFT” to specify a direction to move the mouse back inside the ASA24 application window. Then, say, “MOUSE CLICK” to place focus back on to ASA24.
