Notes on all tables

1. Table 1 values are weighted for the complex sample design and for CPS Tobacco Use Supplement non-response (includes both self- and proxy- respondents). Values in Tables 2, 3, and 4 are weighted for the complex sample design and for Tobbaco Use Supplement self-response (includes only self-respondents).
   
   
2. Tabled values may not sum exactly to 100% due to rounding error.
   
   
3. Tables 1 through 4 contain simple parameter estimates (percentages), and measures of variance in the form of confidence intervals. These confidence intervals were estimated using replicate weights. Alternative estimates of variance and confidence intervals can be made for simple analyses using Attachment 17 of the 2001-2002 Tobacco Use Supplement File (PDF) of the US Census Bureau Technical Documentation. Replicate weights necessary for more complex analysis such as regression or analysis of variance are available from NCI.

How "Smoking not allowed at home" and "Smoking not allowed at work" were defined in Table 2

For smoking not allowed at HOME, values are determined from the item:

"Which statement best describes the rules about smoking in your home: No one is allowed to smoke anywhere, smoking is permitted in some places or at some times, or smoking is permitted anywhere." Percentages represent choice "No one is allowed to smoke anywhere."

For smoking not allowed at WORK, values are determined from asking respondents who work indoors (and who are not self-employed, or working in someone else's home, in several buildings, or in a motor vehicle):

1. "Does your place of work have an official policy that restricts smoking in any way?" [IF YES:]
   
   
2. "Which of these best describes your place of work's smoking policy for indoor public or common areas, such as lobbies, rest rooms, and lunch rooms - Not allowed in any areas/Allowed in some areas/Allowed in all areas"
   
   
3. "Which of these best describes your place of work's smoking policy for work areas - Not allowed in any areas/Allowed in some areas/Allowed in all areas"
   

Percentages represent those reporting smoking is "Not allowed in any public areas" and "Not allowed in any work area" among indoor non-self employed workers.

Please note that:

• Data in Table 4 are for people who reported smoking every day one year prior to the date of the survey.
  
  
• "Any cessation attempt in the past year" includes:
  1. daily smokers with one or more quit attempts in past year,
  2. current some-day smokers,
  3. former smokers who quit < 3 months prior to interview, and
  4. former smokers who quit 3+ months prior to interview.
  
  
• Those under "Quit smoking for 3+ months" are a subset of the respondents reporting any cessation activity in past year, and includes only former smokers who had quit 3+ months prior to the interview.
